Majuli Raas Mahotsav 2026
Three nights of Raas Leela on the world's largest river island, staged by the satras and villages of Majuli.
Raas begins on Raas Purnima, the full moon on 24 November 2026, and usually runs about three days; some stages start the evening before. Satras announce their programmes closer to the date.
About the event
Raas Mahotsav is Majuli's biggest festival. On the full moon of the Assamese month of Kati-Aghun, the island's satras (Vaishnavite monasteries) and villages stage the Raas Leela, plays on the life of Krishna with music, dance and elaborate masks and costumes, through the night.
It's spread across the island rather than in one place: the big satras such as Garamur and the Kamalabari satras run their own stages, and dozens of village stages put on their own shows. In 2025 there were performances at 12 satras and more than 50 open-air stages.
Majuli is about 6 hours from Guwahati and then a ferry, and rooms on the island are few, so festival week is about planning: where to stay, which nights, and how you'll move between stages after dark.

Nearest railway station
Jorhat Town or Mariani Junction

Planning tips
- Book your stay on the island early; rooms fill up weeks before the festival. Jorhat is the fallback, but then you're tied to the ferry timings.
- Garamur Satra's tickets sell out well ahead; ask your stay to help you book.
- Reach Neamati Ghat early in the day: festival week brings long queues, and vehicles only go across when there's space.
- Performances run late into the night, and late-November nights by the river are cold. Carry a warm layer and a torch.
Get there your way
Drive yourself or let a local driver take you. Same regular pricing, no event surcharge.
Drive it yourself
A Suzuki Ertiga 7-seater or a bike gets you to Neamati Ghat at your own pace, with Kaziranga on the way. On the island, a bike is the easiest way between the satra stages at night. The ferry takes vehicles when there's space, so be at the ghat early or leave the car in Jorhat.
