The route and where to stop

From Guwahati it's about 6 hours to Neamati Ghat near Jorhat, then a 1-hour ferry. The route passes Kaziranga, so the two combine well. Here's how, and which of our rentals suits it.

  1. Guwahati (Maligaon)

    Pick up your rental at our Maligaon location, about 2 km from Kamakhya station.

    Visit the satras, watch traditional mask-making and pottery, and see Mishing villages and the island's birdlife.

What the road is like

It's flat highway east through Assam, with trucks and town traffic in places. The ferry is the part to plan around: services run regularly in the dry season, but timings change through the year.

Ferries carry vehicles as well as passengers, but space and timings vary. Ask at the ghat, or leave the car in Jorhat and explore the island locally.

May to September
Monsoon: heavy rain, ferry disruptions, and parts of the island can be submerged. Best avoided.

A three-day Majuli trip from Guwahati

  1. Day 1

    Guwahati to Kaziranga (afternoon safari) or straight on to Jorhat.

  2. Day 2

    Neamati Ghat to Majuli by ferry. Satras, mask-making and a Mishing village; stay on the island.

  3. Day 3

    Morning on the island, ferry back, and drive towards Guwahati, breaking at Kaziranga if you need to.
