Self-drive route guide · 450–500 km loop from Guwahati
Meghalaya loop from Guwahati by self-drive car, bike or scooty
Meghalaya's best places sit close together: Shillong, the waterfalls and root bridges of Cherrapunji (Sohra), Mawlynnong and the clear river at Dawki. On your own wheels you can join them into one loop from Guwahati, with short riding days and a different bed every night or two.
- Distance
- 450–500 km loop
- Drive time
- 2–4 hours most days
- Route
- Guwahati → Shillong → Cherrapunji (Sohra) → Shillong → Pynursla → Mawlynnong → Dawki → Shillong → Guwahati
The route and where to stop
Here's the order that works, where to stay, a six-day plan with a seventh day to spare, and which of our rentals suits it. You pick up and drop off at our Maligaon location in Guwahati.
Guwahati (Maligaon)
Pick up your rental at our Maligaon location, about 2 km from Kamakhya station.
Shillong100 km
Two nights: the first after the drive up NH6 past Umiam Lake, the second after a day at Laitlum Canyons, Shillong Peak or Elephant Falls. Every leg of the loop passes back through here.
Cherrapunji (Sohra)150 km
About 55 km past Shillong: the Mawkdok viewpoint on the way, then waterfalls, caves and the Nongriat root bridges. Stay two nights so one whole day is free for the trek or the falls.
Mawlynnong
Off the Shillong–Dawki road at Pynursla: the clean village, the sky walk and a living root bridge, as a stop on the way to Dawki.
Dawki & the Umngot River
80–90 km south of Shillong. A boat on the Umngot, the border bridge, and a night by the river at Dawki or Shnongpdeng before the long day back.
What the road is like
Every leg is on roads our single-route guides already cover: NH6 up to Shillong, the ridge road to Sohra, and the Dawki road south via Pynursla. None of it is hard, but the hill legs are slow, so plan on 50–150 km a day rather than distance for its own sake.
The loop goes back through Shillong between Sohra and Dawki, so you can leave heavy bags at your Shillong stay. Fog comes up on the ridges in the late afternoon and the monsoon brings heavy rain: ride or drive the hill sections in daylight, and keep the last day, Dawki to Guwahati, for an early start.

Best time to go
- October to April
- The dry season: clear views, and the Umngot at its clearest from November. October still has the waterfalls flowing after the monsoon.
- November
- The Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong, and cool, clear riding.
- June to September
- The monsoon: Sohra's waterfalls at their biggest, but wet roads, fog and clouded water at Dawki. Allow extra time.
A six-day Meghalaya loop from Guwahati
Day 1
Guwahati to Shillong (100 km, 3–4 hours) via Nongpoh and Umiam Lake. Evening at Ward's Lake and Police Bazaar.
Day 2
Around Shillong with a light bike or car: Laitlum Canyons in the morning, Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls after. Second night in Shillong.
Day 3
Shillong to Sohra (about 55 km) by the ridge road, stopping at the Mawkdok viewpoint. Afternoon at the falls. Overnight in Sohra.
Day 4
A full day in Sohra: the Nongriat double-decker root bridge trek, or a waterfall ride (Nohkalikai, Dainthlen, Kynrem). Second night in Sohra.
Day 5
Back towards Shillong, then south on the Dawki road. Mawlynnong at midday, and the Umngot River in the afternoon. Overnight at Dawki or Shnongpdeng.
Day 6
An early boat if you didn't get one, then back via Shillong to Guwahati (180+ km), off the hills before dusk. On a scooty, or with time to spare, break it with a night in Shillong (day 7).
Fuel, permits and what to carry
- No permit is needed for Meghalaya, for Indian or foreign visitors. Carry your driving license and an ID (visitors from abroad: passport, visa and International Driving Permit).
- Fuel up in Guwahati and in Shillong before the Sohra and Dawki legs: options are sparse after that.
- Book stays ahead in Sohra and near Dawki in peak season (October to April and long weekends).
- The Nongriat trek is about 3,500 steep steps each way: plan a whole day, with good shoes and water.
Meghalaya loop from Guwahati: questions & answers
How many days do I need for a Meghalaya road trip from Guwahati?
Six days covers Shillong, Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong and Dawki at a comfortable pace. Take seven on a scooty or riding two-up, so the last day isn't Dawki to Guwahati in one go.
What's the best order for Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki?
Shillong first, then Sohra, then Dawki and Mawlynnong, then home. The Sohra and Dawki roads both start from Shillong, so you pass back through it between them, and a night by the river at Dawki sets you up for the drive home.
How far is the whole loop?
About 450–500 km from Guwahati and back: 100 km to Shillong, about 55 km each way to Sohra, 80–90 km each way to Dawki, and 100 km home.
Can I do the Meghalaya loop on a rented scooty?
Yes. Scooters are allowed on all of it. It suits confident riders travelling light; take seven days and a geared bike if you're two people with luggage.
Can I end the trip in Shillong or Dawki?
No. Pickup and drop are in Guwahati (or at Guwahati airport on request, for a fee), which is why the plan loops back.
Rental terms (documents, deposit, km limit, late returns) are on the self-drive rentals page.
