Why take a driver for Meghalaya

  • The hill roads after Nongpoh, to Sohra and to Dawki are long and winding, with fog from mid-afternoon. A local driver handles them every week.
  • Nobody in your group has to drive, so everyone sees the views.
  • Drivers know where to stop and park at the viewpoints and how long each leg really takes.
  • Good for families with children or older parents, and for first visits to the hills.

Best time to go

October to November
After the monsoon: clear skies, and the waterfalls still flowing.
March to May
Pleasant weather and clear views.
June to September
The monsoon: the waterfalls at their biggest, but wet roads and fog; allow extra time.
December to February
Cold, clear days; Shillong is cold at night.

Permits and what to carry

  • Indian nationals don't need a permit for Meghalaya. Foreign nationals should check the current entry rules before travelling.
  • Carry rain gear in every season, especially for Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth.
  • Wear shoes with grip for the caves and viewpoints.
  • The Nongriat double-decker root bridge is about 3,500 steep steps each way; plan a whole day if you want to do it.
