Quick take: Drive yourself if you're comfortable on hill roads and want to stop wherever you like: it's the cheaper way, from ₹799/day for a scooty. Take a car with a local driver if it's your first time in the hills, you're going to Tawang, or you'd rather look at the view than the road: from ₹3,450/day in Meghalaya. We do both from Guwahati, so here's the honest version of how to choose.

The self-drive prices are our daily rent. Car-with-driver prices are the lowest starting figure from our estimate for a day in Meghalaya; a longer trip costs a little less per day, and Arunachal costs more (from ₹4,400/day). Get your exact figure from the instant estimate, or see trip costs for Meghalaya with a driver and Tawang with a driver.

Choose self-drive if…

  • You enjoy the drive itself. The Guwahati to Shillong road is about 100 km of well-paved highway that climbs into pine forest after Nongpoh. On a bike, that's the best part of the trip.
  • You want to stop anywhere. Viewpoints on the Shillong–Sohra ridge, a tea stall above Umiam Lake, an extra hour at a waterfall: nobody's waiting for you.
  • You're on a budget. Two people on a bike at ₹999/day plus fuel is the cheapest way to see Meghalaya with your own transport.
  • You're a group that likes to drive. Our Suzuki Ertiga 7-seater seats 7 at ₹2,799/day, which works out well split between friends.

What you need: a valid driving licence for the vehicle (original and a photocopy). There's no age limit and no security deposit on the vehicle; we only take a deposit for the full tank of fuel, settled when you return it. Helmets come with every bike and scooty.

Choose a car with a driver if…

  • It's your first time on mountain roads. The hill sections are steady rather than scary, but fog after mid-afternoon and trucks on the bends take some getting used to.
  • You're going to Tawang. The Guwahati to Tawang road is about 480 km over two days, crossing Sela Pass at 13,700 ft. We rent cars and bikes for it, but most people are happier with a driver who's done it many times.
  • You're travelling with parents or small children. Nobody has to concentrate on the road, and everyone can nap between sights.
  • You want to see a lot in a few days. A driver who knows where to park at Nohkalikai or how long the Dawki stretch really takes saves hours.

Cherrapunji (Sohra) (about 150 km via Shillong)Good in a car; on two wheels, carry rain gearGood for families, especially in the monsoon
Dawki and Mawlynnong (180+ km)For experienced riders, or by car over two daysOften the easier choice: a long day of winding roads

Mixing the two

You don't have to pick one for the whole trip. A common plan: ride a bike to Shillong and around the city, then hand it back in Guwahati and take a car with a driver for a longer leg like Tawang. Tell us your dates and we'll work out the combination.

FAQs

Is self-drive cheaper than hiring a car with a driver? Usually, yes. A scooty starts at ₹799/day and a bike at ₹999/day, against ₹3,450/day for a sedan with a driver in Meghalaya. You pay for your own fuel on a rental, so compare the totals for your actual route.

Can I take a self-drive rental from Guwahati to Meghalaya and Arunachal? Yes. Our rentals can go anywhere in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Arunachal and Nagaland need an Inner Line Permit, and we help you apply.

Do I need a permit for Meghalaya? Indian nationals don't. Foreign nationals should check the current entry rules before travelling.

Which is safer for Tawang: self-drive or a driver? For most people, a driver. The road is long, high and changeable, with snow at Sela Pass in winter. If you do drive, split it over two days with a night in Bomdila or Dirang.

Where do I pick up a rental? At our location in Guwahati; pickups start from 7 AM, and you can collect the night before an early start at no extra cost.
