Why take a driver for Cherrapunji

  • The Shillong–Sohra road runs along a winding ridge, with sudden fog and rain at any time of year. A local driver knows it.
  • After the root bridge steps, nobody in the group has to drive.
  • Drivers know where to stop and park at the viewpoints, and how long each leg really takes.
  • Good for families with children or older parents, and for a first visit to the hills.

Best time to go

October to November
After the monsoon: the falls still flowing and the clearest skies.
March to May
A good middle ground: decent waterfall flow and clearer skies.
June to September
Peak monsoon: the waterfalls at their mightiest, but wet roads and views that can disappear in fog. Allow extra time.

Permits and what to carry

  • Indian nationals don't need a permit for Meghalaya. Foreign nationals should check the current entry rules before travelling.
  • Carry rain gear in every season. Sohra's reputation for rain is well earned.
  • Wear shoes with grip for the caves and the root bridge steps.
  • The Nongriat root bridge is about 3,500 steep steps each way; it suits reasonably fit adults and takes most of a day.
