Quick take: Getting around is the part of a Meghalaya trip you can actually plan to the rupee. For the classic three days (Guwahati to Shillong, a day in Cherrapunji, back to Guwahati), transport costs ₹2,397 in rent on a scooty, ₹2,997 on a bike or ₹8,397 in our 7-seater, plus fuel. With a private car and driver it's from ₹10,250. Here's how those numbers add up.

The trip we're pricing

Three days, about 350 km in total:

  • Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong, about 100 km on NH6 (route guide).
  • Day 2: Shillong to Cherrapunji (Sohra) and back, about 55 km each way, with Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters Falls and the caves (route guide).
  • Day 3: Shillong back to Guwahati.

Add a day for Dawki and Mawlynnong if you can; the Dawki route guide has the plan.

Self-drive rent is our daily rate times three. Car-with-driver figures are the lowest end of our estimate for a 3-day Meghalaya trip; your quote depends on the exact plan. Fuel is a rough guide for about 350 km at current pump prices and typical mileage, and it changes with how you ride and how much you explore.

Per person, it gets cheaper fast

  • Two on a bike: ₹2,997 in rent, split two ways, plus your share of the fuel. This is the cheapest way to have your own transport in Meghalaya.
  • Six in the 7-seater: ₹8,397 split six ways, and you stop wherever you like.
  • Four in a sedan with a driver: from ₹10,250 split four ways, with no driving at all.

What's not in these numbers

  • Stays and food. These vary too much by season and style to give one figure. Shillong has the widest choice; Sohra has fewer places, so book ahead in the monsoon and on long weekends.
  • Entry tickets and parking at viewpoints and caves: small amounts, but carry cash.
  • Extra distance. Each rental day includes up to 300 km, which a Meghalaya trip rarely uses up. Beyond that it's ₹3/km for bikes and scooters and ₹8/km for the car.

How to keep it cheap

  1. Ride two-up. A bike for two halves the rent per person.
  2. Pick up the night before. Collect your rental the evening before an early start at no extra cost; the rental still starts the next day.
  3. Fill up in Guwahati and again in Shillong. Pumps thin out beyond both, and the vehicle comes with a full tank, so you only pay for what you use.
  4. Stay longer, pay less per day. For a week or more, ask us about long-rental discounts.
  5. Return on time. Late returns are charged by the hour. Running late? Tell us before your return time and you get a 1-hour grace period, or extend at the normal daily rent.

FAQs

What's the cheapest way to do a Meghalaya trip from Guwahati? Two people on a rented bike or scooty. Rent starts at ₹799/day, and fuel for a three-day Shillong and Cherrapunji loop is usually under ₹1,000.

Is there a security deposit? Not on the vehicle. We take a deposit for the full tank of fuel you're given, settled when you return it.

Can a scooty manage Shillong and Cherrapunji? Yes, scooters are allowed and manage it at a gentler pace. Break the trip with a night in Shillong. A geared bike is more comfortable beyond Shillong, especially two-up.
