Quick take: Kamakhya Temple sits on Nilachal Hill, about 2 km from our pickup in Maligaon. A scooty is the easiest way up: rent one from ₹799/day, ride up early before the queues, and spend the rest of the day exploring Guwahati. Bikes start at ₹999/day.

Why go on two wheels

  • We're close. Our pickup in Maligaon is on the same side of the city as Nilachal Hill, about 2 km from the temple.
  • Go at your own time. Early morning darshan is calmer, and you don't need to arrange a cab before dawn.
  • Make a day of it. After the temple, ride on to the riverfront, Umananda ferry ghat and the markets. See a slow day in Guwahati on a scooter.

The ride up

The road climbs Nilachal Hill with a few bends: easy on a scooty, at a gentle pace. Near the top, it gets busy with pilgrims, vehicles and stalls, so ride slowly. Park where you're directed and walk the last stretch to the temple.

Tip

Go early in the morning. The queues for darshan get longer through the day, and the hill road is quieter before the crowds arrive.

When to go

  • Most of the year: early morning is the best time for a calmer visit.
  • Ambubachi Mela (June): one of the largest gatherings in Northeast India. The temple closes for three days and then reopens, and the hill is very crowded. Expect road restrictions; you may need to park further down and walk.
  • Navratri and Durga Puja: busy, especially in the evenings.

How long to plan

A quick darshan takes 30 to 45 minutes, longer at busy times. A full visit to the complex, including the ten Mahavidya temples, takes two to three hours. More in our Kamakhya Temple guide.
