Driving home for Diwali
Working or studying in Guwahati and going home for the festival? A car of your own means no hunting for bus or train seats in the festival rush, and room for the family, the luggage and the boxes of sweets.
- Where you can take it: anywhere in Assam, and on to Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland (the last two need an Inner Line Permit, which we help you get).
- How far: the fair-use limit is 300 km for each rental day, counted over the whole rental. A 2-day rental includes 600 km, a 4-day rental 1,200 km. Add up your round trip: Tezpur, for example, is about 180 km each way. Extra distance is charged per km (see the rental terms).
- When to leave: pick the car up the evening before (no extra cost: your rental starts the next day) and leave early, before the festival traffic builds on the highway.
Bhai Dooj and family visits
Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November is a holiday in Assam, and the day many people cross the city or the state to visit their brothers and sisters. A one-day rental is ₹2,799; with 7 seats, the whole family goes in one car.
On the days in between, a car makes the round of relatives easy: no waiting for cabs in the festival rush, and room for everyone and the gifts.
A day out with the family
If the holidays are for staying close, these are easy family drives from our pickup, on flat roads:
- Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, about 48 km: rhinos close to the city. Drive to the gate and take the sanctuary's own jeep safari. See Pobitora from Guwahati.
- Chandubi Lake, about 64 km: a relaxed day out through tea gardens.
For two or more days away, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Kaziranga and the rest are in our Diwali trips from Guwahati post.

Tips for driving at Diwali
- Book early. Festival weekends are our busiest days.
- Avoid the markets in the evening. Fancy Bazar and the city markets are packed around Dhanteras; park outside and walk in.
- Don't drive back late on Diwali night if you can help it: the roads are busy, crackers go off at the roadside and visibility is poor in the smoke.
- Park away from where crackers are being lit, and keep the windows up.
- Drive the hill roads in daylight if you're heading to Meghalaya or Arunachal.
Rather not drive?
Let a driver take you: a car with a driver from ₹3,800/day, picked up from your home anywhere in Guwahati. Good for older relatives, a late Kali Puja night, or a long drive home without the driving.
