Unlike a chauffeur-driven tour, a self-drive rental lets you stop wherever you want — a tea stall, a viewpoint, a village market — without coordinating with a driver's schedule. It's also simply more fun on two wheels for short-to-medium distances.
Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all visitors, and self-drive logistics there are more complex than a rental pickup in Guwahati can support. For Tawang, Ziro, or Bomdila, a chauffeur-driven tour is the practical choice — check our trip estimate instead.
Short rides (under 70 km) — perfect for a scooter
Sualkuchi Silk Village — 35 km, about 1 hour each way. A flat, easy ride along the Brahmaputra to Assam's silk-weaving heartland. Watch Muga and Pat silk being handwoven, and pick up a saree or stole directly from the weavers.
Chandubi Lake — 64 km, roughly 1.5 hours. A scenic lake formed after a 19th-century earthquake, ringed by forest and tea gardens. Mostly flat roads with a few gentle bends — comfortable on a scooter, even for a first-time rider.

Medium day trips (70–150 km) — bring a geared bike
Nongpoh — 60 km, about 1.5 hours, and the first proper hill town as you cross into Meghalaya. A good warm-up ride if you're planning to continue further into the hills another day, with pine forests and roadside orange stalls.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary — 48 km, about 1.5 hours by road. Ride to the gate on your rental, then switch to the sanctuary's own jeep for the safari itself — self-drive vehicles aren't permitted inside the park.
Shillong — around 100 km, 3 hours via NH-6. This is where a geared bike earns its keep — steady climbs, hairpin bends, and cooler air as you gain altitude. Start early to enjoy the ride in daylight and avoid evening fog on the descent.
Best rental for these: the Yamaha FZ — enough power for sustained climbs, comfortable for two on hill roads.
Longer trips (150 km+) — take the car
Cherrapunji (Sohra) — around 150 km via Shillong, 4–5 hours. Best done as a full-day loop or overnight trip rather than a there-and-back ride on a bike, especially if you want time at the waterfalls and living root bridges.
Dawki — 180+ km one way. A long day on a bike, but comfortable in a car with AC, especially if you're travelling with family and want to see the crystal-clear river without rushing back.
Tezpur — around 180 km, 4 hours, on the Assam side. A quieter riverside town with Mughal-era ruins and temple complexes, well suited to a relaxed overnight drive.

- Carry your license and ID. You'll need a valid driving license at pickup, and it's worth keeping a photocopy with you on the road.
- Start early for hill routes. Fog can roll in by late afternoon on the Shillong and Cherrapunji roads — aim to be off the hills before dusk.
- Download offline maps. Network coverage gets patchy past Nongpoh, especially in Meghalaya's interior.
