Quick take: The best bike or scooty rental is the one that tells you every cost up front. Before you book anywhere in Guwahati, ask about the deposit, the km limit, helmets, the fuel policy, the documents, where you're allowed to ride, and what happens if you're late. Below is the checklist, with our own answer to each. Our scooties start at ₹799/day and bikes at ₹999/day; every price is on the price list.

1. The deposit

Ask how much, in what form, and when it comes back. Money held as a deposit is money you can't use on the trip.

Ours: there's no security deposit on the vehicle. We collect a deposit covering the cost of the full tank of fuel, and settle it when you return.

2. The km limit

If a rental offers unlimited km, ask what conditions come with it; a clear daily limit is easier to plan around. Ask whether the limit is counted per day or over the whole rental: over the whole rental is better, because a long riding day is balanced by a short one.

Ours: 300 km a day, counted over the whole rental. A 3-day trip includes 900 km, which covers Shillong, Cherrapunji and back with plenty to spare. The rate for extra distance is on the price list.

3. Helmets

Check that a helmet is included, that it fits, and whether you get one for a pillion.

Ours: a helmet comes with every bike and scooty at no extra cost. Riding two-up? Ask for a pillion helmet when you book.

4. Fuel

Ask what's in the tank at pickup and how fuel is settled, so you don't start with a detour to a pump.

Ours: a full tank at handover. You pay only for the fuel you use, settled against the fuel deposit.

5. Documents

You need a valid driving licence for the vehicle category: a motorcycle licence for a bike or a scooty. Bring the original and a photocopy.

Ours: that's all, and there's no age limit. Visiting from abroad? Bring your passport with visa, your home licence and an International Driving Permit; see renting as a foreign visitor.

6. Where you can ride

Plenty of riders rent in Guwahati for a hill trip. Make sure the rental allows the trip you have in mind, and ask about permits for Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Ours: anywhere in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Scooters are allowed to Shillong and further into Meghalaya. For Arunachal and Nagaland you need an Inner Line Permit, and we help you apply. See the ILP guide.

7. Late returns and extensions

Ask how late returns are charged, and how to extend if your plans change.

Ours: late returns are charged for every hour or part of an hour; tell us before the agreed time and you get a grace hour. Want more days? Tell us before your return time, and extra days are at the normal daily rent, subject to availability. The hourly rates are on the price list.

8. The check at pickup

Walk round the vehicle with the rental before you leave and note every scratch, dent and missing part. Take photos. This is what protects you from paying for someone else's damage.

Ours: we check the vehicle with you at pickup and again at return. Damage is settled at that return check, so if none is found, we won't come back to you about damage later.

9. Pickup location and hours

A pickup far from where you're staying costs time and cab fares. Ask where it is, from what time, and whether they can meet you at the airport or station.

Ours: Maligaon, on the west side of the city, 2 km from Kamakhya station and 12 km from the airport. Pickups are from 7 AM, and a late-night pickup or return can be arranged on request. On request, we can also hand over at the airport, for an extra fee. More: rentals near you in Guwahati.

10. Reviews

Read recent reviews on Google, and look at how the rental replies to the bad ones. A quick question on WhatsApp before booking tells you a lot too: how fast they answer, and whether the answer is clear.
