Quick take: For Tawang two-up with luggage, take the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 (₹2,499/day): it has the most power for Sela Pass. For rough roads on a lighter bike, the Hero XPulse 210 (₹1,699/day). For Meghalaya's back roads and a first go at off-road, the Hero XPulse 200 4V (₹1,499/day). For paved highways to Shillong, Kaziranga or Tawang on a budget, the Bajaj Pulsar N160 (₹1,199/day). All four come from our pickup in Guwahati with a helmet.

Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: for Tawang and the high passes
The biggest engine of the four, made for long days at altitude. Two people and bags over Sela Pass is where it earns its price: it pulls on the climbs where a smaller bike has to work hard, and the 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension take the broken stretches in their stride.
It's taller and heavier than a commuter bike, so it suits riders who are comfortable on bigger bikes. If you've mostly ridden 125–160cc bikes, take the first day easy.
Pick it for: Tawang, Ziro, Arunachal two-up, a week across the Northeast with luggage.
Hero XPulse 210: rough roads on a lighter bike
A liquid-cooled 210cc with six gears and the same tall, long-travel build as the 200. It's lighter and easier to handle than the Himalayan on a narrow broken road, with enough power for the long climbs to Sela Pass and Ziro for one rider.
Pick it for: Tawang or Ziro solo, rough village roads, riders who'd rather not handle a heavy bike.
Hero XPulse 200 4V: Meghalaya's back roads and first off-road rides
The lightest and simplest of the adventure bikes: oil-cooled, five gears, and forgiving on gravel. It's the easiest way into off-road riding, comfortable on the Shillong highway and happiest on the side roads to waterfalls and villages around Cherrapunji and Dawki.
Pick it for: Meghalaya loops, a first go at rough tracks, shorter Arunachal trips solo.
Bajaj Pulsar N160: paved highways on a budget
Not an adventure bike, but a strong, comfortable road bike with dual-channel ABS and upside-down forks. On paved highways it's the cheapest way to cover long distances two-up: Shillong, Kaziranga, and Tawang for riders who stick to the tarmac and take it steady.
Pick it for: Shillong and Meghalaya on good roads, Kaziranga and Majuli, Tawang on a budget.
And the Royal Enfield Scram 440?
New in our fleet: the Royal Enfield Scram 440 (₹1,999/day), a 443cc Royal Enfield scrambler that sits lower and feels lighter than the Himalayan. It's a good Tawang bike for a confident solo rider travelling light in the good season; two-up or in winter, the Himalayan is still the pick. We compare the two in Scram 440 or Himalayan 450 for Tawang, and the costs for 5, 7 and 10 days are in Guwahati to Tawang on a rented adventure bike.

Before a high-altitude ride
- Permits: Arunachal Pradesh needs an Inner Line Permit for Indian visitors; we help you apply. See the ILP guide.
- Distance: our limit is 300 km a day, counted over the whole rental; a 5-day Tawang trip includes 1,500 km, and the round trip is about 960 km.
- Fuel: fill up whenever you pass a pump in Arunachal; pumps are far apart.
- Daylight: ride the hill roads in daylight only, and expect fog late in the day.
- Cold: Sela Pass is cold for much of the year, and snow closes it at times in winter. See Tawang in snow.
