The 7 and 10-day prices include 10% off for 7 days or more. A helmet comes with every bike, and there's no security deposit on the bike, only a refundable deposit for the full tank.

On top of the rent, budget for fuel, stays in Bomdila or Dirang and Tawang, and food. Fill up whenever you pass a pump in Arunachal: they're far apart.

How many days to plan

  • 5 days is the shortest sensible trip: Guwahati to Bomdila or Dirang, on to Tawang, a day in Tawang, and two days back.
  • 7 days gives you a buffer for weather and a second day around Tawang, for Sela Lake or a high-altitude lake trip.
  • The round trip is about 960 km. Our fair-use limit is 300 km a day, counted over the whole rental, so 5 days already include 1,500 km.

Need an early start? Pick the bike up the night before at no extra cost: the rental still starts the next day.

The route

Guwahati → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang → Sela Pass → Tawang. The climb starts at Bhalukpong, where you enter Arunachal Pradesh. Stop the first night at Bomdila (about 8,500 ft) or Dirang to get used to the altitude before the pass. Ride the mountain sections in daylight.

The full route, stops and best season are in our Guwahati to Tawang guide.

Permits

Which bike?

  • Two-up with luggage, or in winter: the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. It has the most power at altitude and the longest suspension.
  • Solo, travelling light, in the good season: the Royal Enfield Scram 440 is lower and easier to handle, and costs less. We compare the two in Scram 440 or Himalayan 450 for Tawang.
  • Solo on a lighter bike: the Hero XPulse 210 is light on broken roads and has six gears for the long climbs.

Before you go

  • Season: March to June and September to November are best. Snow can close Sela Pass for a while in winter; see Tawang in snow.
  • Gear: proper cold-weather and rain layers. It can be warm in the plains and freezing at the pass.
  • Experience: these bikes suit riders who are comfortable on bigger bikes, especially two-up on hairpins.
  • Pillion helmet: the rider's helmet is included; ask for a second one when you book.
