How to Reach Shillong From Guwahati: Every Option Compared
Quick take: Shillong is about 100 km from Guwahati by road, 3–4 hours on NH6. There's no train, and very few flights, so you go by road. Shared taxis and buses are the cheapest; a rented scooty or bike is the most fun; a self-drive car or a private car with a driver is the most comfortable. Here's how they compare.

Shared taxi
Shared taxis to Shillong leave from around Paltan Bazaar, near Guwahati railway station, once they fill up. They're the cheapest way to go and run through the day. The trade-offs: you wait for the car to fill, luggage space is limited, and you can't stop on the way.
Bus
State and private buses run between Guwahati and Shillong. They cost the least but take at least as long as a taxi, and they leave at fixed times. Good if you're travelling light and on a tight budget.
Rent a scooty or bike and ride
The road is the best part of the trip: flat for the first hour, then a climb through pine forest after Nongpoh, with Umiam Lake just before Shillong. Scooters are allowed to Shillong, and a geared bike is more comfortable two-up or if you're going on to Cherrapunji or Dawki.
