How to Reach Tawang From Guwahati: Every Option Compared
Quick take: Tawang is about 480 km from Guwahati, 12–14 hours of driving, normally split over two days with a night in Bomdila or Dirang. There's no railway or regular airport, so it's the road (or, on some days, a helicopter). You'll need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh whichever way you go. For most people, a private car with a local driver is the best balance of comfort and safety on this mountain road.
The options at a glance
| Option | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Private car with a driver | 2 days each way | Most travellers: comfort, flexibility, a driver who knows the road |
| Self-drive car | 2 days each way | Confident drivers used to mountain roads |
| Rented bike | 2 days each way | Experienced riders with cold-weather gear |
| Shared Sumo | Long day(s), with changes | Budget travellers |
| Bus | Long, overnight journeys | The lowest cost |
| Helicopter | About an hour, when it flies | Saving days, if seats and weather allow |
Private car with a driver
The road climbs from the Assam plains through Bomdila (about 8,500 ft) and Dirang, over Sela Pass at 13,700 ft, to Tawang at about 10,000 ft. It's long, with hairpins and weather that changes fast, and in winter there's snow at Sela. A local driver who does it regularly takes the stress out, and everyone can rest and acclimatise.
Costs for 5 to 7 days, two sample plans and the permit are on our Guwahati to Tawang private car page. A 5-day trip in a sedan starts at ₹24,500.
Self-drive car or bike
Our rentals are allowed in Arunachal Pradesh, and we help you apply for the ILP. It's for confident drivers and experienced riders: drive in daylight only, break the journey at Bomdila or Dirang to acclimatise, and keep a buffer day for weather. Our self-drive car is ₹2,799/day, and bikes start at ₹999/day. The full route, stops and advice are in our Guwahati to Tawang route guide.
Shared Sumo and bus
Shared Sumos and buses run towards Tawang, often with a change of vehicle on the way (for example at Tezpur or Bomdila). They're the cheapest option but slow, cramped for a two-day mountain trip, and fixed to their timetable. Check current departures and fares locally, and book ahead in peak season.
Helicopter
A helicopter service has connected Guwahati and Tawang on some days of the week. Seats are few, and flights depend on the weather in the mountains, so have a road plan as a backup. Check the current schedule before you plan around it.
Don't forget the permit
Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh; foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit. It's checked where you enter Arunachal at Bhalukpong. Our guide to the Arunachal Inner Line Permit for a road trip explains how to apply. If you book with us, we help you apply.
