Quick take: Kynrem Falls is a three-tier waterfall right beside the road at Umwai village, south of Sohra (Cherrapunji), next to Thangkharang Park. It's an easy ride from Sohra town on a scooty or bike, and you can see it from the gate in a few minutes. The entry fee on the sign when we visited in August 2026 was ₹30 for adults and ₹10 for children. Rent a scooty in Guwahati from ₹799/day, or a bike from ₹999/day.

Where Kynrem Falls is

Kynrem Falls in full monsoon flow, three tiers dropping down the cliff above the road at Umwai village

Kynrem Falls is at Umwai village, East Khasi Hills district, on the road south from Sohra towards Shella and the Bangladesh border. It falls in three tiers down the cliff face, and the bottom tier lands just above the road. The sign at the gate calls it the 7th highest waterfall in India.

Thangkharang Park is right next to it, at the edge of the plateau. Many people see Kynrem first from the park, across the gorge, then ride down to the gate for the close-up.

How to reach Kynrem Falls by scooty or bike

  • From Sohra town: ride south on the road towards Shella. It's a paved hill road with some bends and short climbs, and quiet once you're out of town. The falls are on your side of the road, so you can't miss them.
  • From Shillong: ride to Sohra first, about 55 km on the ridge road, then carry on south. Stop at Wah Kaba Falls on the way in. See Shillong to Cherrapunji by scooty or bike.
  • From Guwahati: Sohra is about 150 km via Shillong. Don't try Guwahati to Kynrem and back in one day. Stay a night in Shillong or Sohra. The full route is in our Guwahati to Cherrapunji guide.

Fuel up in Shillong: there are fewer pumps beyond it.

Kynrem Falls entry fee (2026)

From the sign at the gate, August 2026:

TicketFee
Adult₹30 per head
Child₹10 per head
Camera₹50
Drone₹200
Film shoot₹500

Fees are collected at a small booth at the gate and can change, so carry some cash. There are snack and fruit stalls at the gate too.

What to expect

The lower tier of Kynrem Falls crashing over boulders, with the upper tier and more falls on the cliffs behind

You don't need to trek. From the gate you stand at the foot of the lower tier, with the spray in your face during the monsoon, and look up at the upper tiers. In August the cliffs on either side had a dozen smaller falls streaming down them.

The rocks near the water are slippery all year. Stay on the path and keep children close.

Thangkharang Park, next door

The view from Thangkharang Park over forested hills to the Bangladesh plains and a wide river

Thangkharang Park sits at the edge of the Meghalaya plateau. From its viewpoints the hills drop away to the plains of Bangladesh, with rivers shining across them, and you can see Kynrem Falls across the gorge. Give it 30 to 45 minutes.

The same Thangkharang view half hidden by monsoon cloud, with banana plants in the foreground

In the monsoon, clouds roll up the slope and the view comes and goes. Mornings are usually clearer.

Best time to visit Kynrem Falls

  • June to September (monsoon): the falls are at their biggest, and every cliff has extra falls. Expect rain, mist and wet roads. Ride slowly.
  • October to November: still a strong flow, clearer skies, and the best views from Thangkharang Park.
  • December to May: the falls thin out in the dry months, but the ride and the plains view are still worth it.
