The Royal Enfield Scram 440 sits between our everyday bikes and the big adventure tourer. This is what it is, who it suits and what renting it involves. Price and booking are on the Royal Enfield Scram 440 page, and the rest of the range is under adventure bikes on rent in Guwahati.
What it is
Royal Enfield's scrambler: a 443cc air- and oil-cooled single with a 6-speed gearbox and dual-channel ABS. It has a 19-inch front wheel, a 17-inch rear wheel and a 15-litre tank. It seats two.
Who it suits
- Riders who want a Royal Enfield that's easier to handle than a full adventure bike. It's lower and lighter than the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, with the pull of a bigger engine.
- Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Shillong is about 100 km up NH6, and Cherrapunji about 55 km further. The bigger engine makes the climbs easy, even two-up with bags.
- Guwahati's streets. It handles city traffic well.

Who should pick another bike
For Tawang, the high passes, or two-up with luggage, take the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: more power at altitude and a 21-inch front wheel for rough roads. Royal Enfield Scram 440 or Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 for Tawang? goes through it. For rough village roads at a lower price, the Hero XPulse 210 is lighter; see Royal Enfield Scram 440 vs Hero XPulse 210.
If you've only ridden smaller bikes, give yourself a little time to get used to it before the hill roads. It's heavier than a 125 to 160cc commuter.
