Scooty or bike for Shillong?

  • Scooty (from ₹799/day): allowed to Shillong and further into Meghalaya. Fine for one rider travelling light; start early and take the climb after Nongpoh slowly.
  • Bike (from ₹999/day): more comfortable riding two-up, with luggage, or if you're going on to Cherrapunji and Dawki.

How many days for Shillong?

  • 2 days: Shillong itself. Umiam Lake on the way up, Laitlum Canyons or Shillong Peak, Police Bazaar in the evening.
  • 3 days: add Cherrapunji (Sohra), about 55 km from Shillong, for the waterfalls.
  • 4 days: add Dawki's clear river and Mawlynnong, best with a second night in Shillong.

The ride up

The road is NH6 via Jorabat, Byrnihat and Nongpoh: four lanes most of the way, then steady climbing after Nongpoh. Leave Guwahati early to miss the city traffic and the trucks.

Fog settles on the upper road in the late afternoon, so plan to be in Shillong before dark, and ride in daylight only on the hill roads.

What's included

  • A helmet with every scooty and bike
  • A full tank at handover; you pay only for the fuel you use
  • No security deposit on the vehicle, only a refundable deposit for the fuel
  • Fair-use limit of 300 km a day, more than enough for Meghalaya
  • No permit needed for Meghalaya
  • 10% off for 7 days or more

Scooty and bike rental in Guwahati for a Shillong trip: questions & answers

How much does it cost to rent a scooty or bike in Guwahati for a Shillong trip?

A Yamaha RayZR 125 Fi Hybrid Street Rally is ₹799 a day: ₹1,598 for 2 days and ₹2,397 for 3 days. The Yamaha FZ-S FI V2 is ₹1,998 for 2 days and ₹2,997 for 3 days. A helmet is included; fuel is extra.

Is a scooty enough for the Guwahati to Shillong road?

Yes for one rider with a light bag: it's a wide, well-paved highway with a steady climb, and our scooters are allowed to Shillong and further into Meghalaya. Riding two-up, or going on to Cherrapunji and Dawki, a geared bike is more comfortable.

Can I return the scooty or bike in Shillong?

No. Pickup and drop are in Guwahati, so plan the trip as a loop back to Guwahati.

What do I need to rent a two-wheeler for Shillong?

A valid driving licence for a two-wheeler, the original and a photocopy. There's no permit for Meghalaya and no security deposit on the vehicle, only a refundable deposit for the full tank of fuel.

Can I ride to Shillong and back in a day?

You can: it's about 200 km for the round trip, 3–4 hours each way. It leaves little time in Shillong, so most riders stay at least one night.

Full rental terms are on the self-drive rentals page.
