The route and where to stop

Here's the route, how to time it so you catch a safari on arrival day, and which of our rentals suits it. Your rental stays at the park gate; safaris are in the park's own jeeps or on elephants.

  1. Guwahati (Maligaon)

Pick up your rental at our Maligaon location, about 2 km from Kamakhya station.

  2. Nagaon110 km

About two hours of flat highway from Guwahati: the natural halfway break for breakfast or tea.

  3. Kohora (Central Range)220+ km

The main base for Kaziranga, with stays, safari bookings and the Central Range gate. Arrive by early afternoon for an afternoon safari.

  4. Tea estates around Kaziranga

Worth a slow drive or a visit between safaris; they're a big part of the landscape here.

What the road is like

It's flat highway almost all the way, with trucks and town traffic in places. The first stretch to Nagaon is about 110 km and just over two hours.

Drive in daylight where you can, especially on the return, when visibility and traffic are more predictable. Keep to the posted speed limits near the park: wildlife crosses the road here.

Which rental for Guwahati to Kaziranga?

By self-drive car

Our pick for Kaziranga.

  • AC that matters on the long, hot highway stretch through the Assam plains.
  • Room for the family, binoculars and camera gear.
  • Leave Guwahati by 7 or 8 AM to make an afternoon safari on arrival day.

By bike

Possible, but a long haul for a weekend.

  • Over 220 km each way on hot, flat highway: fine for experienced riders with a few days.
  • Your bike stays at the park gate, so you'll still need the park's jeep for the safari.
