The route and where to stop

It's about 480 km, usually split over two days, and needs an Inner Line Permit, which we help you apply for. Here's the route, where to stay, and which of our rentals suits it.

  1. Guwahati (Maligaon)

Pick up your rental at our Maligaon location, about 2 km from Kamakhya station.

  2. Bhalukpong

Where you enter Arunachal Pradesh. Keep your Inner Line Permit and ID handy; the climb into the hills starts here.

  3. Bomdila

A hill town at about 8,500 ft, with a monastery and orchards. The classic first-night stop to acclimatise.

  4. Dirang

A valley town with hot springs and apple orchards; a good alternative overnight, or a stop on the way back.

  5. Sela Pass

The high point of the drive at 13,700 ft, with Sela Lake beside the road. Cold and often snowy in winter.

  6. Tawang480 km

Tawang Monastery, the largest in India, the War Memorial, and day trips to high-altitude lakes like Pankang Teng Tso.

What the road is like

After Bhalukpong it's a long mountain road with hairpin bends and steady altitude gain, climbing to 13,700 ft at Sela Pass. Weather and landslides can slow things down, so keep buffer days in your plan.

Break the journey at Bomdila or Dirang: it's safer, more comfortable, and helps you acclimatise before the higher sections. Avoid driving the mountain sections after dark.
